Spec Kawasaki Concours 14 Recalled-Police
Kawasaki is issuing a recall on the police-spec version of the 2009-2012 Concours 14 because the add-on equipment may overload the electrical system.Police motorcycles are typically loaded with accessories such as sirens,radio equipment,and additional lighting.To support these accessories.the Kawasaki Concours 14 Police is equipped with a separate battery and a second wiring harness with 12 fused circuits.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the secondary electrical components could cause an overload in the charging unit between the regulator and the two batteries. Over time, this may overheat the main 30 amp fuse,cutting all electrical current, resulting in a loss of engine power.The first report of a blown fuse in a a Concours police bike came in November 2011. Kawasaki initiated an investigation in December 2011 found seven similar reports. On March 23,2012, Kawasaki determined the problem was caused by the add-on equipment installed by Idaho-based companies Beaudry Motors and BMS.
Kawasaki will contact dealers and law enforcement agencies that purchased its police-spec Concours with instructions on how to mitigate the problem. The recall campaign affects 273 units. The campaign only applies to police-spec models. Regular Kawasaki Concours 14 motorcycles are not affected as they do not have the secondary electrical system or police accessories.
